Bandleader and composer, Andy Sheppard is one of Europe’s leading saxophonists and one of a very few British musicians to have made a significant impact on the international jazz scene. He was born in England in 1957, but took up the saxophone only at 19, highly motivated by the music of John Coltrane, and three weeks after getting his first instrument was playing in public with the Bristol-based quartet Sphere.
After a period in Paris where he worked with groups including performance art band Urban Sax, he returned to the UK in the mid-80’s recording the album “Andy Sheppard” with Steve Swallow as producer. The record was well received and led to Sheppard being awarded the Best Newcomer prize at the 1987 British Jazz Awards, followed by the Best Instrumentalist Award in 1988. The year of 1987 also saw Sheppard join George Russell’s Living Time Orchestra and tour with Gil Evans. His second solo album, Introductions in the Dark, was released in 1989 and Sheppard was awarded Best Album and Best Instrumentalist in 1989’s British Jazz Awards. Sheppard formed his first big band, the Soft on the Inside Band, in 1990 for an album of the same name. This band turned into In Co-Motion, who released an eponymous album in 1991.
Sheppard’s membership in Bley’s Lost Chords quartet (with Swallow and Billy Drummond) resulted in their self-titled offering in 2004. In 2005 he and pianist Rita Marcotulli recorded On the Edge of a Perfect Moment for Incipit, followed in 2007 by The Lost Chords Find Paolo Fresu.
His first record for ECM label was 2009’s Movements in Colour, an electric/acoustic quintet offering with two guitarists. It was followed three years later by Trio Libero, with the saxophonist in the company of double bassist Michel Benita and drummer Sebastian Rochford. Sheppard then joined Bley and Swallow for 2013’s Trios, followed in 2015 by his own quartet album Surrounded by Sea, which featured Benita, Rochford, and guitarist Eivind Aarset. In 2016 he once again paired with longtime collaborators Bley and Swallow for Andando el Tiempo. Two years later he returned with the quartet album Romaria, also released by ECM.
Sheppard has been invited to compose for large and small ensembles in the areas of jazz and contemporary classical music from England, Norway, France, etc..
