The Coreto (2011) is an ensemble that joins 12 musicians belonging to the jazz community of Porto, which develops its creative work with the association Porta Jazz. They are jazz musicians who come together under the leadership of João Pedro Brandão, founding member of Porta Jazz and Coreto, an unavoidable figure in the local and national jazz community.
The first album comes from the realization of a repertoire dedicated to Mediterranean music, resulting from his master’s research. After this first project (Aljamia), acclaimed by national and international critics, the group continued with the objective of creating a “space” for the exploration and realization of an original and experimental repertoire, coming from the most varied creative sources that emerge in the Jazz in Portugal.
With five albums published by the publishing arm of the association, Carimbo Porta Jazz, namely: 2012 – “Aljamia” – music composed by João Pedro Brandão; 2014 – “Diving” – music composed by António Pedro Neves; 2015 – “Sem Chão” – music by several composers from Porto; 2017 – “Analog” – music composed by João Pedro Brandão, Coreto had its first nomination for Best Jazz Album at the Play – Portuguese Music Awards – in 2021 with “A Tribo”, the 5th album by the collective and third with original music by João Pedro Brandão. These albums have been critically acclaimed, appearing on lists of Best national Jazz albums; Best Group award in the 50 years of José Duarte’s 5 minutes of Jazz.
In addition to these five albums, Coreto participates in two songs from the most recent album by singer Manuel Linhares Suspenso: “Jogo de Sombras” with arrangement by Guillermo Klein, another of the most famous names in contemporary jazz, and “Sentimental Illness”. Coreto has already performed in several national festivals and even premiered it´s last cd “A Tribo” at the Jazz 2020 festival at Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian.
There are also performances at Casa da Música, at the São Luiz Jazz Festival, Sines Jazz Festival, Porta-Jazz Festival, Lisbon Jazz Festival, Avante Festival, Serralves em Festa, Matosinhos Jazz Festival, Why not Festival, and the Swiss cultural center AMR (Geneva), among others.
Coreto arrives now to the historic Angrajazz festival too, with the lastet release A Tribo.
“A Tribo” is yet another proof to the creative relevance of João Pedro Brandão and Coreto
and rises to the olympus of national records in 2021.” António Branco, in jazz.pt
